    Foreword

Dear colleagues and readers of the Special Issue of the scholarly journal "Energy Systems Research". This issue presents the proceedings of "Regional Energy Policy of the Asian part of Russia", a national Russian conference held for the 3rd time and featuring international speakers. The conference took place in the settlement of Tankhoi (Republic of Buryatia) on September 27-30, 2022.

The main purpose of the event is to have discussions on the issues and prospects of regional energy development against the background of new challenges, elaborate mechanisms for implementing regional energy policies, exchange ideas between representatives of research organizations and regional authorities, and identify areas of cooperation.

This scientific conference contributes to advancing the development of regional energy sectors by serving as a forum for discussions on key issues and for policy alignment and harmonization to facilitate the transformation of energy systems of individual regions so as to address external and internal challenges in a well-argued, evidence-based, and pluralist way.

The geographical scope covers a wide range of regions in the Asian part of Russia that differ significantly in terms of the immediate environment and level of development of their energy systems. The Asian regions of the country play an important part in shaping Russia's eastern policy and developing cooperation with Northeast Asian countries, including energy cooperation. This makes conference topics relevant to scholars and representatives of energy companies from Mongolia, Japan, China, and the Republic of Korea.

Our conference discusses both theoretical and practical issues related to key areas of concern in the energy sector development, ensuring that these are well-aligned with today's context and challenges.

We are pleased to welcome all our readers and authors who have expressed their opinions and views on contemporary issues facing the energy sector of the Asian part of Russia, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration and exchange of research findings, both at the conference and on the pages of our journal.
